| | This magnificent antebellum home has been restored to its original grandeur. "Tyro" displays both architectural and historical interest. It is the finest example of Greek Revival Architecture in the area. Each of the twelve rooms have some period furniture. The house was built on a 1400 acre plantation, located on The Great Wagon Road that ran from Philadelphia to Augusta. This was an excellent location for a tavern because it was mid-way between Old Salem and Salisbury. "Tyro" offered a place where weary travelers could rest, get warm, eat a meal, spend the night, or catch up on the news, which was current because the stage stopped here. Weddings, funerals, and other social events were held at "Tyro'. The home has eight beautiful fireplaces. Still visible are the wooden pegs that hold together the windows, doors and woodwork. A visit to "Tyro" includes a guided tour of the antique museum in the old corncrib, the blacksmith shop, the two main floors of the house and exterior interest. |
